Maria Napolitano

MARIA NAPOLITANO

A white woman in her 30s, with a nose ring, light brown hair, and green eyes.

Maria Napolitano is an agent at Bookcase Literary Agency. Previously, she spent nearly five years as a book scout at Aram Fox, Inc., where she fell in love with the process of matchmaking books with just the right editors and publishers around the world. As an agent, Maria represents a broad range of fiction, from commercial rom-coms to subversive thrillers and upmarket book club fiction. Her free time is largely spent reading or running—but none of that reading-on-the-treadmill nonsense. Maria is a born New Yorker and Cornell graduate who currently lives in Astoria, Queens with a sourdough starter named Ryeley.

WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR

In adult fiction I’m looking for a wide range of commercial to upmarket fiction, in particular: family sagas and complicated friendship stories, feminist perspectives, a bit of genre-bending, supremely pitchable high concept work. I’m also looking for romance and rom-coms with a big, fresh feel, and diverse representation, especially queer romance. I am interested in suspense & thriller, especially with a literary edge, unique central premise, or self-awareness that adds another dimension to the project — but not genre crime writing, military fiction, procedurals, or cozies. In general, I prefer contemporary to historical settings, but overall I’m interested in work that deals with people, places, and time periods that have been under discussed in mainstream publishing.

DARA HYDE

Woman with brown hair smiling at camera. She is wearing a pink and white patterned shirt and a shell necklace. Blue and black Spanish-style patterned wallpaper in the background

Dara Hyde is Senior Agent at the Hill Nadell Literary Agency in Los Angeles and represents a wide range of fiction and nonfiction, including literary and genre fiction, graphic novels, narrative non-fiction, memoir, young adult, and children’s literature. Her clients include Myriam J.A. Chancy, Angie Cruz, Natashia Deon, Maggie Downs, Jamie Harrison, Matt Mendez, Justin Eisinger, Gene Ha, Rye Hickman, Soo Lee, Jordan Morris, Samuel Sattin, Lilah Sturges, and more, and they have been winners or finalists for the the Women’s Prize, NAACP Image Award, Carnegie Medal, Eisner Award, Anthony Award, YALSA Award, Harvey Award, International Latino Book Award, and the Reading the West Award, among others. Before joining Hill Nadell, she spent over a decade as an editor and rights and permissions manager at independent publisher Grove Atlantic in New York City.

WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR

I’m drawn to stories that examine social issues in unique ways, and voices that have been historically under-represented in publishing; stories that explore the bonds and complexities of both blood and chosen families; stories with crossover appeal, whether that’s YA/adult or blending genres in surprising ways. I relish being hooked by a high concept and a clever premise, but that creative vision needs strong character development and an attention to every word. I find imperfect characters more interesting than those that start off with all the answers, and I want to walk away from every book having learned something new.

Crystal Orazu

CRYSTAL ORAZU

An early 20s Black woman, with short black curly hair wearing a black vest with white flowers on the lapel and white top underneath.

Crystal’s love for novels first blossomed among the stacks of many Houston public libraries and it has grown stronger ever since. She hopes to represent and uplift authors whose stories allow readers to feel seen and heard in new and exciting ways.

WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR

For Fiction, I am looking for stories that explore culture, identity, and mental health all intertwined within a coming-of-age narrative, especially from a first- or second-generation immigrant perspective.

I’d love to see more adult characters questioning life and finding their footing or something where the main character is grappling with issues of becoming more independent or dealing with less-than-ideal familial relationships with a darker or fantastical twist as well.

In terms of non-fiction, anything where the writer is simply nerd-ing out on a concept that they care about or can see intricate "beautiful mind" patterns in their head that no one else can see (or cares to see just yet).

Halimah Marcus

HALIMAH MARCUS

A blond woman in her thirties, wearing a blue blazer and a grey t-shirt, standing in front of a blue sky.

Halimah Marcus has been a fiction editor since 2012, when she co-founded Electric Literature’s weekly fiction series, Recommended Reading. Over the last decade, she has worked with hundreds of established and emerging writers. Stories she has edited have gone on to be included in Best American Short Stories, Best American Mysteries and Suspense, Best Australian Stories, the O’Henry Prize Anthology, and the Pushcart Prize Anthology.

Halimah is also the editor of Horse Girls (Harper Perennial, 2021), an essay anthology that reclaims and recasts the horse girl stereotype, which was a New York Times “New and Noteworthy” pick. Her own short stories have appeared in Indiana Review, Gulf Coast, One Story, BOMB, The Literary Review, and elsewhere. Andrew Sean Greer selected her short story, “The Party Goers,” from the The Southampton Review as a distinguished story in Best American Short Stories 2022. Halimah has an MFA from Brooklyn College and lives in Kingston, New York.

I have edited and admire work by A.M. Homes, Weike Wang, Sheila Heti, K. David Wade, Helen DeWitt, Sarah Gerard, Laura Van Berg, Jade Jones, Ben Marcus, Kawai Wahburn, Maggie Shipstead, Nathan Harris, and Catherine Lacey.

Electric Literature publishes all genres, including fiction, critical, personal, and experimental nonfiction, flash, poetry, and graphic narrative. As fiction editor, I am looking for well-structured, inventive, lived-in short stories that take seriously the emotional and physical landscapes of their setting and characters. I have deep affection for traditional short story form, and yet I am also drawn to work that can be described as uninhibited—in style and subject matter, and by genre, trends, expectations, and rules.

Abby Muller

ABBY MULLER

A white woman in her late 20s with short brown hair and round tortoiseshell glasses wearing a floral black-and-white button-up.

Abby Muller is an editor at Abrams, where she acquires fiction for The Overlook Press and nonfiction for Abrams Press. Prior to joining Abrams in 2022, she spent six years at Algonquin Books. She is from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and received her B.A. in anthropology from Brown University. Outside of publishing, she enjoys TTRPGs, marching bands, embroidery, and dabbling in an inadvisable number of crafts.

WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR

In fiction, I look for literary and upmarket writing with deeply written characters and compelling emotional stakes. I love interesting, unusual premises and have a fondness for fiction that plays with the boundaries between literary and genre writing. I have a particular affinity for LGBTQ+ fiction and would like to see more works from disabled and neurodivergent writers, writers of color, and members of other underrepresented groups.

In nonfiction, my interests are broad, but are centered around smart, well-researched, accessible books that examine some aspect of how humans interact with each other or the world. For instance, I love cultural histories, subcultural deep dives, interdisciplinary approaches to STEM topics, journalistic exposés, and memoirs with a researched or reported element.

Across fiction and nonfiction, I appreciate a distinctive voice, a sense of humor, a drive towards introspection, and an attitude of empathy (on the part of the author, if not necessarily a novel’s characters).

Martha Wydysh

MARTHA WYDYSH

A bespectacled, smiling, late-twenties, very pale white woman with (dirty blonde? brown?) curly/wavy hair.

Martha Wydysh is a graduate of Cornell University and the Columbia Publishing Course. Her first job in agenting was as a literary assistant in subsidiary rights at ICM Partners, helping to sell audiobook and serial rights for all clients at the agency. She came to Trident Media Group in 2016 to work as Magazine Rights Associate and Executive Assistant to Ellen Levine and began building her own client list in 2019. She is primarily seeking literary fiction as well as upmarket fiction and has a particular love of short fiction, especially linked collections or novels-in-stories. She is also looking for psychological, domestic, and social thrillers. In non-fiction, she is interested in representing very select projects in the areas of narrative non-fiction, cultural criticism, and literary memoir. In addition to working closely with her clients on their book projects, Martha loves placing their short stories, book excerpts, articles, and essays with magazines and literary journals. She lives in Brooklyn, NY.

WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR

Literary fiction that is contemporary, emotionally and psychologically acute, and not necessarily plot-centric. Slightly speculative and satirical novels that question the status quo here in the US and abroad, as well as anything that verges on the absurd, obsessive, or humorous. Short fiction that transports and immerses readers in an unfamiliar place. In non-fiction, I gravitate toward anything that "reads like fiction," is beautifully written, and forces the reader to take a hard look at the systems in place around us.
