WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR

When it comes to fiction, I truly run on emotion and instinct. I always know when a manuscript is a good fit when I start having imaginary editorial discussions with the author in my mind. With nonfiction projects, I’m looking for a similar level of passion and connection to the material but also to the subject matter–I like to work with people who are particularly insightful and who write really well about things that I care deeply about (or who write so well that they make me care deeply about things I didn’t think I cared about before). I particularly look for books that take me into unfamiliar worlds, or force me to look at the world differently.

Sarah Bedingfield

Sarah has been an agent with Levine Greenberg Rostan since 2016. She represents high-concept literary novels, unique psychological suspense, big-hearted and surprising family dramas, historical fiction telling unfamiliar stories, and underrepresented and diverse voices.

She reads most types of literary and upmarket commercial fiction, especially works that show powerful imagination, revelatory character arcs, compulsive plotting and unpredictable points of view illustrating important themes. Emotional, inventive stories told through nuances of motherhood, human connection or feminist issues, novels with light speculative elements, and darker narratives that build can’t-look-away tension tend to be her favorites, particularly those set in wild, unexpected places. She loves anything that highlights nature or the environment in some fashion, especially in extremes. Sarah does not typically represent genre fiction.

Hailing from North Carolina, Sarah graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a double major in Psychology and English. She spent her first three years in New York City teaching 11th grade English in the Bronx. She began her publishing career in 2012 as an Editorial Assistant at Crown and Hogarth.

It’s impossible to list all, but a few of her favorite authors are Shirley Jackson, Gabriel García Márquez, Victor Hugo, Emily St. John Mandel, Erin Morgenstern, Haruki Murakami, Sarah Waters, and Madeleine L’Engle. Some favorite recent reads from her spare time have been BLACK CAKE, THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY, LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND, and THE NEED.

Gráinne Fox

My guiding principle is a book that can “stimulate the mind and satisfy the heart” and this illuminates every read, regardless of categorization. Gorgeous writing combined with propulsive storytelling.

I’m interested in narrative nonfiction that just might involve spies & espionage, or that spotlights a slice of social history I’ve not encountered yet. I’m increasingly curious about smart non-fiction that makes me question my thinking and teaches me something new about human behavior and the world we live in.

I have a dark, soft spot in my heart for literary crime and thrillers.

I’m looking for new American and International voices, and for literary fiction that’s modern and swoon-worthy on a line level but with an equally enveloping plot. I love dysfunctional families (aren’t they all?). I am inevitably passionate about Irish Writing, of course, and always keen to read lots more. I love a singular, spectacularly written literary memoir just as much as I love a transporting piece of historical fiction.

WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR

Contemporary fiction, literary or crossover. Narrative non-fiction that could be either an untold story of heroics from WWII or a slice of social history from Europe. Smart thinking that continues my education! New American voices.

Lane Shefter Bishop

Lane Shefter Bishop is a multi-award-winning producer/director who has received numerous accolades for her work including an EMMY, six Telly Awards, a Videographer Award, three Communicator Awards, a Sherril C. Corwin Award, an Aurora Award, a Davey Award, a New York Festivals Award and the DGA Fellowship Award for Episodic Television. Currently Ms. Bishop is CEO of Vast Entertainment, THE go to book-to-screen company, with numerous projects, including:

Producing Feature Films The DUFF (2015) for CBS Films & Lionsgate and Assassination Gamesfor MPCA – both based on books... Writing, producing & directing six TV Movies for Lifetime… Producing TV Series The Brain Trust for NBC and Confessions of a Sociopath for UCP – both based on books... And Producing the Limited Series The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein for Sony Pictures TV – also based on a book.

Ms. Bishop has also been a 3-time speaker at the WGA and numerous writers’ conferences, and is author of Sell Your Story in a Single Sentence; Advice From the Front Lines of Hollywood (published by W.W. Norton & Co). The book hit #1 on Amazon in New Releases five times before its actual release date. In an online interview, CNN dubbed her “The Book Whisperer” of Hollywood. Ms. Bishop holds a B.A. in Literature from UC Santa Barbara and an M.F.A. in Production from USC's School of Cinema/Television. She is a director-member of the Directors Guild of America and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Carolyn Kuebler

Carolyn Kuebler is the editor of New England Review, where she works with authors at all stages of their careers and in all genres. Before coming to NER as managing editor in 2004, she was an associate editor at Library Journal and founding editor of Rain Taxi Review of Books. She began her work in publishing as an intern at Milkweed Editions in Minneapolis, served briefly as marketing director at Dalkey Archive Press, then worked as a bookseller at the Hungry Mind in St. Paul. Carolyn has published dozens of book reviews, small-press profiles, and author interviews in publications such as Publishers Weekly, Review of Contemporary Fiction, Rain Taxi, and City Pages. Her essay on literary magazines is included in The Little Magazine in Contemporary America (University of Chicago Press), and her fiction has been published in The Common, Copper Nickel, Sleepingfish, and The Literary Review. She is currently finishing up a novel and, as always, working on the next editor’s note for NER. She has an MFA from Bard College and a BA from Middlebury College.

WHAT NEW ENGLAND REVIEW IS LOOKING FOR

NER does not have an agenda or preferred style. We love experiments, but we also love polished crafted writing, in all forms, as long as it holds some kind of revelation for the reader.

NER is on the lookout at all times for writing that rewards the reader for spending time with it. We’re impressed by writing that wrings all that it can from the language, and that’s serious in its purpose, which of course doesn’t prevent it from sometimes being very funny.

In short, we publish what’s good with the understanding that quality is not a settled matter. We’re always looking for work that challenges our own beliefs, our taste, our experiences, and what we think writing can do. We believe that writing as an art form is under constant revision, renovation, and innovation, which isn’t to say that traditional forms don’t also have something to offer.

Nathan Rostron

Nathan Rostron is a publisher, book editor, and marketing director with a passion for superb storytelling in all forms. Over his fifteen years’ experience in the New York publishing industry, he's been the Editorial and Marketing Director of Restless Books, an independent publisher of international fiction, narrative nonfiction, and books for young readers; the literary editor of Bookish, an online book-discovery startup; and an assistant editor at Little, Brown and Company. He currently sells rights for McNally Editions, a new publishing line from visionary bookseller Sarah McNally of McNally Jackson Books in New York, and works as a freelance book editor and publishing consultant.

Mollie Glick

Mollie Glick is a literary agent at Creative Artists Agency.

Glick graduated from Brown University and began her career as a literary scout, advising foreign publishers regarding the acquisition of rights to American books. Bibi Lewis is a literary agent at the Ethan Ellenberg Literary Agency where she represents Children's fiction and non-fiction and adult fiction. A contract nerd through and through, Bibi manages subsidiary rights for the agency as well. She was born and raised in NYC.

She is looking for high-concept stories with captivating writing. She reads widely across many genres and enjoys books that play with tropes while bringing a fresh and diverse outlook. She is interested in realistic, upmarket and book club fiction as well as romance. Lisa Grubka

Lisa Grubka joined Fletcher and Co. in 2012. She represents a broad variety of authors, including a National Book Award winner and several New York Times bestsellers. Her clients’ books have been adapted for television and translated into more than twenty languages. Lisa began her career at Farrar, Straus and Giroux and the William Morris Agency, and is a graduate of the University of Michigan.
