Georgia Bodnar

Georgia Bodnar is an editor at Viking Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House. She acquires primarily nonfiction with themes that touch on social justice, race, politics, feminism, history, religion, popular culture, soft business, and science. She is especially drawn to writing with an activist impulse that explores equitability in societies both domestic and foreign, and proper stewardship of the natural world. Her list is comprised of writers who reflect the diversity and breadth of the world we live in; writers whose work upends familiar narratives and provides us with a new lexicon for understanding the complexity of the human experience. A “rising publishing industry star” (BuzzFeed), she is the editor of On the Other Side of Freedom by activist DeRay McKesson, which was nominated for a LAMBDA Literary Award and named a best book of 2018 by NPR and Esquire; as well as the forthcoming Hood Feminism by feminist and essayist Mikki Kendall. Other authors of hers include the Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Jonathan Kaufman; comedian, writer, and actor Aparna Nancherla; acclaimed scientist and Emory ethnobotanist Cassandra Quave; and New York Times editor Jyoti Thottam.

What I'm Looking For

Acquires primarily narrative nonfiction and memoir and is especially drawn to writing that explores ethical dilemmas in the big questions facing human existence: questions of equability in societies both near and far, and proper stewardship of the natural world. She is passionate about writing that upends familiar narratives, writing that seeks to provide us with a new lexicon for understanding our past, present, and future by authors who reflect the diversity and expansiveness of the world we live in. I also acquire selective fiction works, and I am drawn to literary fiction in settings that span the globe. I look for writers with a distinctive voice who imagine unique ways to create an irresistible combination of voice and story.
