Tracy Sherrod is currently the editorial director of Amistad, an esteemed imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. She is working with Steve Harvey, acclaimed children’s book author Jacqueline Woodson, actor and director Bill Duke, Paul Beatty, Paula Madison, Miko Branch of Miss Jessie’s, Jan Gaye, professor Pamela Newkirk, Timbaland and celebrated novelist Dolen Perkins-Valdez and Dimitry Elias Leger.
She established Tracy Sherrod Literary Services in New York City in 2002 and successfully managed it for twelve years. She represented award-winning novelists Kalisha Buckhanon; New York Times bestselling author Karrine Steffans; reality star Shaunie O’Neal; cultural critic bell hooks; Street Literature Writer of the Year Treasure E. Blue; as well as several emerging, promising authors.
Before striking out on her own she was a senior editor at Simon and Schuster. She has also held editorial positions with Henry Holt and Company, The Feminist Press, Essence magazine, and Marie Brown Literary Services. She has published and/or worked with many celebrated authors, including bestselling novelists Terry McMillan and Walter Mosley; Sapphire, the Estate of James Baldwin; Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton; and critically acclaimed writers Paul Beatty, Melanie Rae Thon, and John Edgar Wideman, among many others.
During her illustrious career Ms. Sherrod has published several New York Times bestsellers in addition to many award-winning books. Among her bestsellers are Zane’s Addicted; Tupac Shakur’s The Rose That Grew from Concrete; Dr. Terry Shintani’s HawaiiDiet; Pastor Mason (“Ma$e”) Betha’s Revelations; and, most recently, Karrine Steffan’s The Vixen Diaries and The Vixen Manual. Some of her works that have received accolades and attention for their literary merit include Douglass’ Women by Jewell Parker Rhodes, River Woman by Donna Hemans, Kin by Zelda Lockhardt, and Breathing Room by Patricia Elam—all Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Award nominees. Still Life in Harlem by Eddy L. Harris was a 1996 New York Times Notable Book of the Year, and The Envy of the World: On Being a Black Man in America by Ellis Cose was featured on the front page of the New York Times Book Review.
Ms. Sherrod has been featured in many publications—Ebony magazine’s “Thirty Under Thirty” and Publishers Weekly “Young Turks to Keep an Eye On” among them. She has also been profiled or interviewed in Essence magazine, the Village Voice, Black Issues Book Review, New York Press, The Source, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, and has appeared on Book Span.
A graduate of Michigan State University’s esteemed James Madison College, Ms. Sherrod has also studied at Cambridge University in Cambridge, England. She has been an adjunct professor in the Publishing Certificate Program of the City College of New York and has lectured at New York University.
